Middle School Special Education

South Valley Academy adheres to an inclusive model of education. Special education services are provided within the general education setting by accommodating and modifying curriculum and, as determined by Individualized Education Programs, through in-class support of a special education teacher and/or educational assistant. Special education services are also available during Specials, Advisory, and at other times as determined according to the needs of students.

Abigail Martinez
Special Education Teacher

I am from Liberal, Kansas but I have lived in New Mexico most of my life. I love the cultural diversity, the hot desert summers, and the delicious green chile of New Mexico. I am a 2007 graduate of South Valley Academy High School. The high school teachers became my role models, and my determination to make a positive mark on the world expanded as I developed professional relationships with instructors in college. During my college years, I explored many career paths. I graduated from New Mexico State University with a Bachelors in Sociology in the winter of 2012. Soon after graduation, I began substituting for APS to gain experience working with adolescents. Then I was hired as a Special Education EA in late 2013 at Van Buren Middle School. Ever since I started working in education two years ago, I have developed a passion for teaching. Now I am attending the Alternative Teacher Licensure Program at Central New Mexico Community College to earn a licensure in Middle School Special Education. In my spare time I watch drama series, walk my dog, or create arts and crafts.
