MESA
(Math, Engineering, Science, Achievement)
Advisor: Andres Plaza
MESA is a yearlong club that meets Wednesday afternoons from 4:00-5:00 pm in Mr. Plaza’s room. It is open for students of all kinds but in particular, for students interested in math, science, and engineering. Students participate in a themed competition against other schools from Albuquerque. This year’s theme is Natural Disasters and students designed and created vehicles for navigating a nuclear spill and also researched and practiced building different types of bridges for the competition. If the students place in the top ten in the local competition, they have the opportunity to compete against the best teams from the rest of the state.
In addition to preparing for the yearlong competition, MESA students participate in many other activities such as weekly competitions, field trips, and fundraisers. This year, we have attended UNM Engineering Day, visited NM Tech, and travelled to the National Museum of Nuclear History and Science. But, the greatest benefit of joining MESA is that students acquire scholarship money for college for each of the MESA related activities that they participate in. The sooner you join, the more scholarship money you can get! Come check us out!

National Honor Society
Staff: Sherry Russell
National Honor Society is a select group of students who have maintained their cumulative GPA at more than 83% of their grades being 3’s and above. This is very difficult to do! The group is committed to Character, Leadership, Service and Scholarship. It is a very prestigious affiliation for students as they are applying to colleges and summer programs. Students are nominated for NHS, then they supply an application, complete with references from teachers and other unrelated adults. The applications are reviewed and only the best are accepted! We are proud to have nearly 10% of our student body as members of this elite organization. They do all kinds of service around the school and community, from helping with registration and translations to sponsoring several blood drives a year on campus.
