From The Principal: May 2012

Congratulations on another terrific school year! We celebrated our graduates at our annual Senior Breakfast and Senior Honors Assembly as well as graduation. We are extremely proud of the Class of 2012 and wish them well in this very exciting transition of their lives.

As some of you may know, South Valley Academy was ranked #3 in the state of New Mexico this year by US News & World Report based on our state test scores as well as how many students take and pass Advanced Placement exams. These results are only possible because of the hard work and commitment that we all do every day on behalf of our students. When parents and families, students, staff and teachers come together to focus on the big picture of preparing our children for college, we get amazing results. This summer South Valley Academy will again offer four summer school classes in English, math, social studies, and science. We also will host a nursing curriculum through UNM’s Diversity program, which will count as a science credit, as well as offer service learning credit for working on the Dragon Farm. Please talk with your student’s advisor if your child is interested in any of these summer opportunities. SVA will also be a site for free lunches provided by the County—any person may receive a lunch free of charge.

Remember that students do have a summer reading assignment that they must complete before they return to school in August. Please speak to your child’s advisor if you have any questions about the assignment.

This summer we anticipate beginning construction on site for our new, permanent facility. Most likely when you return for registration, construction will already have begun. While we are extremely excited for our new buildings, I recognize that next year will be challenging with building on site while at the same time holding classes. We will have much more news about construction in the fall.

¡Felicidades por otro año escolar fantástico! Celebramos a nuestros graduados en nuestro desayuno anual de la Asamblea de Honor y la graduación. Estamos muy orgullosos de la Promoción del 2012 y les deseamos lo mejor en esta transición muy emocionante de sus vidas.

Como algunos de ustedes saben, South Valley Academy ocupó el puesto número 3 en el estado de Nuevo México este año por la revista US News basado en nuestros resultados de las pruebas estatales, así como el número de estudiantes que toman y aprueban los exámenes de Colocación Avanzada (AP). Estos resultados son sólo posibles gracias al arduo labor y el compromiso que todos hacemos a diario en nombre de nuestros estudiantes. Cuando los padres y las familias, estudiantes, personal y profesores se reúnen para centrarse en la meta de preparar a nuestros hijos para la universidad, se obtienen resultados sorprendentes.

Este verano South Valley Academy volverá a ofrecer cuatro cursos de verano: inglés, matemáticas, estudios sociales y ciencia. También seremos anfitriones de un programa de estudios de enfermería a través de un programa de Diversidad de la UNM, que contará como un crédito de ciencia, así como crédito de Servicio de Aprendizaje (Service Learning) para trabajar en la granja del Dragón (Dragon Farm). Por favor, hable con el asesor de su hijo si su hijo está interesado en alguna de estas oportunidades para el verano. SVA también será un sitio para los almuerzos gratuitos proporcionados por el Condado, cualquier persona puede recibir un almuerzo gratis.

Si bien estamos muy contentos por nuestros nuevos edificios, reconozco que el próximo año será un reto con la construcción tomando lugar al mismo tiempo que las clases. Vamos a tener muchas noticias más sobre la construcción en el otoño.

From The Principal: April 2012

Dear SVA Parents,

We are about to finish another school year! January was busy with the legislative session. As a charter school, we are never quite sure what the session will bring. Every year there is discussion about changing the funding formula that would negatively affect small schools like ours. Luckily this year the bill to change funding was tabled and will be studied further during the interim. Also, we had over 50 parents, students, and faculty participate in Immigrant Day at the state legislature on January 24. After the rally, we worked with the ABQ Partnership to visit with various legislators to urge them to keep licenses for all SVA families.

The Public Education Department released the grades of all public schools in the state. I am very proud to say that South Valley Academy earned a baseline grade of B. The final grades will be released in the summer of 2012 after this spring’s Standards Based Assessment (SBA) results have been calculated. We ask that you ensure that your child comes to school next week on his/her assigned day to take the practice SBA exam on the computer. This practice occurs three times a year beginning in 9^th grade and provides important exposure and practice to the actual test that must be passed in order to graduate.

As many of you know, long-term math teacher Mr. Koelling has been ill and is currently on a medical leave of absence. He thanks everyone who has sent him get well cards, phone messages, and prayers. He continues to rest and get better, but we do not yet know exactly when he will return. For now, we are very happy to have Mr. Veitch as our substitute math teacher. Mr. Veitch is a retired veteran math teacher who knows our IMP program very well and is a master teacher. Also, I have hired Mr. Martinez, an SVA parent, to supervise the parking lot from 3:45pm-6:30pm every day except Thursdays and even longer during sporting events. This was due to a suggestion from our Parent Involvement Committee that there be more supervision after hours in the parking lot. Mr. Martinez is bilingual and ensures that the buses pick up our children safely and that no one is driving fast or recklessly.

Every year SVA teachers and staff celebrate our students by sending them Dragon Pride notes by mail. You may have noticed your child’s note in the mail a few weeks ago. This is one way to say how much we appreciate your child for his/her own unique abilities as a person. We also celebrated with our annual Winter Ball, hosted this year by the sophomore class and class sponsor Mr. Bryant. It was a beautiful event.

Thank you for the daily sacrifices you make to provide the best education for your child. By making sure they come to school every day, that they sleep enough at night, that they attend tutoring and/or have a quiet space to do homework—all of these are important pieces to the success of our children.

Queridos estudiantes y familias de SVA: 

¡Estamos a punto de terminar otro año escolar! Enero estuvo ocupado con la sesión legislativa. Como una escuela particular subvencionada, nunca estamos seguros de lo que la sesión traerá. Cada año hay una discusión acerca de cambiar la fórmula de financiación que afectaría negativamente a las escuelas pequeñas como la nuestra. Por suerte, este año el proyecto de ley para cambiar la financiación se pospuso y se estudiará más a fondo durante el ínterin. Además, tuvimos más de 50 padres, estudiantes y maestros participando en el Día del Inmigrante en la legislatura estatal el 24 de enero. Después de la manifestación, hemos trabajado con la Asociación ABQ para visitar a varios legisladores e instarlos a mantener las licencias para todas las familias de SVA.

El Departamento de Educación Pública dio a conocer las calificaciones de todas las escuelas públicas del estado. Estoy muy orgullosa de decir que South Valley Academy obtuvo una calificación inicial de B. Las calificaciones finales se darán a conocer en el verano del 2012 después de que los resultados de los exámenes de esta primavera, llamados StandardsBasedAssessments (SBA), hayan sido calculados. Le pedimos que se asegure de que su hijo venga a la escuela la próxima semana en su día asignado para tomar el examen de la práctica de SBA. Esta práctica se lleva a cabo tres veces al año a partir de 9 º grado y ofrece una importante exposición y práctica de la prueba real que se debe pasar para poder graduarse.

Como muchos de ustedes saben, el Sr. Koelling ha estado enfermo y se encuentra actualmente en ausencia a largo plazo con licencia médica. Él da las gracias a todos los que le han enviado tarjetas, mensajes telefónicos, y oraciones. Él sigue descansando y se siente mejor, pero todavía no sabemos exactamente cuándo va a regresar. Por ahora, estamos muy contentos de tener al Sr. Veitch como nuestro maestro sustituto de matemáticas. El Sr. Veitch es un maestro veterano de matemáticas retirado que conoce nuestro programa de matemáticas (IMP) muy bien y es un gran maestro. Además, hemos contratado al Sr. Martínez, un padre de SVA, para supervisar el estacionamiento de 3:45 pm-6: 30pm todos los días excepto los jueves y con horas aún más largas durante acontecimientos deportivos. Esto se debe a una sugerencia de nuestro Comité de Participación de los padres que haya más supervisión después de las horas escolares en el estacionamiento. El Sr. Martínez es bilingüe y se asegura de que los autobuses recojan a nuestros hijos de manera segura y que nadie conduzca a alta velocidad o con imprudencia.

Cada año, los maestros y el personal de SVA celebramos a nuestros estudiantes mediante el envío de unas notas especiales por correo llamadas “Dragon Pride notes”. Usted puede haber visto la de su hijo en el correo hace unas semanas. Esta es una manera de decir lo mucho que apreciamos su hijo/a por sus propias capacidades únicas como una persona. También celebramos con nuestro baile anual de invierno, organizada este año por la clase de segundo año y su patrocinador, el Sr. Bryant. Fue un evento hermoso.

From The Principal: Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays! I want to thank you again for doing your part as parents to support your child’s education. Attending conferences, staying in contact with your child’s advisor, ensuring that your child comes to school every day on time, giving your child space and time at home to do homework,

picking up your child after tutoring—all of these daily routines take time and energy on your part and are crucial to the success of your child. As a parent myself with three children, I know and appreciate all of the hard work and commitment it takes to raise our children to be successful students and healthy people.

I am happy to report that APS will build our new school starting in the summer of 2012. Construction should take about 14 months, and we are hopeful that we can start our middle school (with grades 6-7) in the fall of 2013-14. We will build over 25,000 square feet to include 13 new classrooms, a greenhouse, a new computer lab, an administrative wing, a student commons, and a digital library/community gathering space. The total project will cost nearly $8 million dollars.

We are about to begin our open enrollment period for school year 2012-13. Beginning in January, any interested student can submit his/her application to enter South Valley Academy. Even if you have children who are current students or graduates of SVA, if you want another child to enter SVA next fall, you must submit an application. Remember that siblings are automatically accepted, but we still need on application on file.

We look forward to an exciting second semester! Our seniors are in the process of applying to colleges and will soon complete the financial aid process. Student athletes are playing basketball; student clubs like MESA, SVPA, Science Olympiad, and others continue to work and meet together to plan activities and fundraisers. Soon we will have Winter Ball, Prom, and Graduation.

I wish you all a restful, safe, and happy holiday vacation! Remember that all students return to school on Tuesday, January 3, 2012.

¡Felices fiestas de fin de año! Quiero darles de nuevo las gracias por hacer su parte en apoyar a sus hijos en su educación. Asistiendo a las confe- rencias, estando en contacto con el/la consejera de su hijo, asegurándose que su hijo llegué a tiempo a la escuela todos los días, dándole espacio y tiempo en casa a su hijo para hacer tareas, recogiendo a su hijo de tutoría- todas estas rutinas diarias toman tiempo y energía de su parte y son cruciales para el éxito de su hijo. Yo misma, como madre de tres hijos, sé y aprecio todo el trabajo y dedicación que se toma para criar a nuestros hijos para que sean estudiantes exitosos y personas saludables.

Estoy feliz de reportar que APS (Albuquerque Public Schools) cons- truirá nuestra nueva escuela comenzando el verano del 2012. La construcción debe de durar más o menos 14 meses, y esperamos comenzar nuestra escuela secundaria (con los grados 6-7) en el otoño del 2013-14. Estaremos construyen- do más de 25,000 pies cuadrados que incluyen 13 aulas, un invernadero, un laboratorio de computadoras, una ala de administración, un espacio para que los estudiantes socialicen, y una biblioteca digital/espacio de reuniones de la comunidad.

Vamos a comenzar la matricula abierta para el año escolar del 2012-13. Comenzando en enero, cualquier estudiante interesado puede entregar su soli- citud para asistir a South Valley Academy. Aunque ya tenga un estudiante en curso en SVA o uno graduado de SVA, si quiere que otro joven asista a SVA el próximo otoño, debe entregar una solicitud. Recuerde que los hermanos/as son aceptados automáticamente, pero de cualquier manera necesitamos una solici- tud archivada.

¡Esperamos un emocionante segundo semestre! Nuestros estudiantes del grado doce están en el proceso de aplicar a universidades y pronto comple- tarán el proceso de ayuda financiera. Los estudiantes atléticos están jugando básquetbol; los clubes de estudiantes como MESA, SVPA, Science Olympiad, y otros, continúan trabajando y reuniéndose para planear actividades y eventos para recaudar fondos. Pronto tendremos los bailes de Winter Ball, Prom, y la graduación.

¡Les deseo a todos un descanso, vacaciones seguras y felices! Recuerde que todos los estudiantes regresan a clases el martes 3 de enero del 2012.

From The Principal: A New School Year

Dear SVA Families:

We are off to another great year, which happens to be SVA’s 12^th year! Just last Friday we hiked the Sandia Mountains with all of our new students and many returning students and parents joined us. Hiking the Sandias has been a long-time SVA tradition that helps our students understand the journey high school and college will be: there will be difficult times where they have to carry their load and tackle the steep climb. But the view, the friendships and the laughs they will make along the way will be things they can always take with them. And after the long hours of sweat and hard work, they will be rewarded with a job well done knowing that they made it to the top, in addition to the spectacular view they will see.

Although this week there are no regular classes, it is extremely important that your child attend the MAP session for the two hours that they are scheduled. This is an important practice test students take on the computer that will prepare them for the actual Standards Based Assessment (SBA) that they will have to take and pass when they are 11^th graders. More importantly, the MAP practice test will give teachers important information about the areas that your child needs most help in.

Estimadas Familias de SVA :

Hemos tenido un buen comienzo este ano, lo cual es el 12o ano de SVA! El viernes pasado todos los nuevos estudiantes, los maestros, y algunos padres de familia hicimos una caminata en las montañas Sandia. La caminata es una tradicion muy establecida en nuestra escuela que les ayuda a los estudiantes a entender lo dificil que sera el camino hacia la universidad: tendran que trabajar muy duro, pero las amistades, las risas, y las vistas siempre seran experiencias muy bonitas que se pueden llevar. Despues de las muy largas horas de caminar, los estudiantes logran su meta de subirse hasta la cumbre. ñ

Aunque esta semana no hubo clases regulars, es sumamente importante que su hijo/a asista a la sesion de MAP par alas dos horas indicadas. El MAP es un examen de practica  en la computadora que les prepara a los estudiantes para tomar el examen verdadero Standards Based Assessment (SBA) que se toma en el 11 grado. Mas importante, el MAP examen les da a los maestros informacion importante sobre las areas en las cuales su hijo/a necesita mas ayuda.
